September 2016 - District 5 Meeting Minutes
Dear KAC District 5 Members,
Here's a summary of September's District 5 meeting.
Minutes September 10, 2016
We had a great meeting on September 10, 2016. Kevin Ravas, who teaches Creative Writing at Emporia State University, spoke on writing Flash Fiction.
Kevin has numerous writing credentials. He is a published poet, novelist, writer of flash fiction, and also is an accomplished musician. Kevin stated that flash fiction, also called micro-fiction consists of roughly 50-200 words, one page or less, and can also be a narrative poem. He also talked about “slice of life” stories, which are much the same but would be true, such as a bit of memoir. Though these writings are very brief, they definitely have structure, and should have a story arc.
We did several writing activities: we wrote a narrative poem or flash fiction and did a couple of share-arounds. He encouraged us to experiment with colloquial speech or single-sentence run-ons. It was a very enjoyable afternoon.
Also, we welcomed five first-time visitors that we hope will return: Janet Lander, Sean McQueen and his sister Lisha Morgan, Paul Briggs, and Loren Harder. I hope I’ve spelled names correctly.
Business meeting. We will host Convention in three years. Estimated cost of running a convention in the past has been about $12,000.
Current Treasurer’s report: $7118.23 on hand at this time.
Convention this year is 9/30 – 10/2. Registration is still open but past deadline for discounts.
Remember to invite people to meetings and then get guests to join – we get credit for numbers of new members.
Those present today voted to keep our meetings at Larksfield place in 2017. Also, Griz stated that he will try to get us reserved for an extra 30 minutes so that total meeting time can be 2-1/2 hours.
Diane Wahto explained possibilities for our involvement with the Tallgrass Film Festival in October, and those present voted for KAC Dist. 5 to become a Community Partner, which involves no money, but we will have opportunity to present the club to those at the festival and hand out brochures, etc.
Today we welcomed five visitors: Janet Landes, Sean McQueen and his sister Lish Morgan (who says she is not a writer, but perhaps we can convince her. Also Loren Harden and Paul Briggs. Please make them welcome, and keep inviting new people.
