October 2016 - District 5 Meeting Minutes
Dear KAC District 5 Members,
Here's a summary of October's District 5 meeting.
Minutes October 8, 2016
The meeting was called to order by Vice President Diane Wahto at 1:30 PM. The group briefly introduced ourselves to one another, stating what we are currently working on in the way of writing.
Diane Wahto spoke about the Tallgrass Film Festival. District 5 is sponsoring a film, Author. Connie White will be introducing KAC at the filming on Friday morning October 14 at Roxy’s 412 ½ E. Douglas. Diane will be doing the introduction on Saturday, October 15 at the Historical Museum.
A list of winners of Convention awards was mentioned, and this list is available on the website: (kacdistrict5.weebly.com/blog/2016-kac- contest-winners- from-d5).
Cindi Kerr was introduced as not only our District 5 blogger, but now she is the editor for the State KAC website, as well. Congratulations, Cindi! We truly appreciate all of your efforts on KAC’s behalf!
Dan Close is the State KAC Prose contest manager. He encouraged all of us to begin working on submissions for next year’s contests. Rules for submission are located on the State KAC website. Dan is also looking for people to help judge submissions.
November is NaNoWriMo month, and Cindi spoke a little about that and encouraged us to take part.
Upcoming programs for the remainder of the year:
November – Suzanne Perez Tobias, Wichita Eagle columnist.
December – Officer elections, D5 youth award recognition, and a short read-around (as there is time). We all agreed that we do want to have time to hear and fellowship with our youth attendees on that day. Will be admonished to keep read-arounds short.
Our program today was presented by Dan Close, who presented on Little Free Libraries, which are home-based boxes set at curbside to contain books for neighborhood exchange. These are fairly simple take-a- book, leave-a-book, read-a- book exchanges, but can be fairly labor-extensive to set up. They can be registered with a national registry, or not, as the individual operator prefers. Full information can be found by “googling”Little Free Libraries.
This was a great presentation and a very interesting concept. Dan himself has set
up a Little Free Library dedicated to his grandfather who was a Wichita Fireman for many years.
Our next meeting will be November 12, 1:30 PM (come early to chat), at the Lakeview Room, Larksfield Place, south side of 29 th street North between Woodlawn and Rock Rd. Hope to see you there.
