November 2016 - District 5 Meeting Minutes
Dear KAC District 5 Members,
Here's a summary of November's District 5 meeting.
Minutes November 12, 2016
President Ray Racobs opened the meeting and invited members and guests to briefly introduce themselves. There were 23 members and two guests at the meeting:
Members: Pat Beckemeyer, Paul Briggs, Roy Beckemeyer, Dan Close, Diane Wahto, Cindi Kerr, Neal Holler, Howard Crise, Gloria Zachgo, Dave Cook, Ann Fell, Susan Howell, Judy Hatteberg, Dixie Brown, Don Marler, Ann Wood, Amy Ackerman, Roy Stucky, Gretchen Eick, Pam Unruh, Loren Harder, Sandra Taylor, and Ray Racobs.
Guests: Sara Harder and Suzanne Perez Tobias.
Ray Racobs read the D5 current bank account balance: $7,068.23.
Diane Wahto announced two activities underway:
1) Inspired by the District 2 2016 convention in Lawrence, Roy Beckemeyer, Bob Dean, Don Marler, and Diane Wahto are serving on a committee to explore establishing a poetry/jazz event for the 2017 Wichita Jazz Festival.
2) Bob Dean and Kevin Rabas are spearheading an effort to have writers contribute to helping bring people divided by the post-election bitterness together. They are envisioning an anthology of writings tentatively titled "Peace, Love and Understanding: Writing Unity through Diversity." The idea "would be to write FOR something, not AGAINST something...Constructive." Members are invited to join in the effort if they wish. As their ideas progress, links will be provided on the KAC web pages to the calls for submissions. Contact Bob Dean for more information.
Dan Close introduced guest speaker Suzanne Perez Tobias. Suzanne is an education reporter and columnist for The Wichita Eagle. She is a first-generation American, born and raised in North Carolina. She has a degree in English from N.C. State University. She moved to Wichita in 1990 to begin working for The Eagle as a general-assignment news reporter. Her column is about family life and runs on Saturdays. Suzanne and her husband, Randy, a photographer, have two children, Hannah, 18, and Jack, 16, who provide limitless joy, frustration, guilt and column ideas.
Suzanne kept the attendees rapt with her sparkling personality; she shared some of her favorite books, ideas for keeping writing authentic, and suggestions for staying inspired. In the Q&A session after her talk, Suzanne covered the state of newspapers in the modern world, how newspapers have changed and their place in the electronic age.
At 3:00, refreshments were available, and members spent the remaining half hour chatting.
Our next meeting will be December 10, 1:30 PM (come early to chat), at the Lakeview Room, Larksfield Place, south side of 29th street North between Woodlawn and Rock Road. Hope to see you there.
- Respectively submitted by Roy Beckemeyer, subbing for Secretary Connie White.
