May 2018 - District 5 Meeting Minutes
Dear KAC District 5 Members,
Here's a summary of May's District 5 meeting.
Minutes May 12, 2018
D5 Vice-President, Taylor Stucky, led the meeting in President, Diane Wahto’s absence. The meeting began with everyone introducing themselves.
After introductions, Cindi Kerr stated that all State Convention and Contest information was now on the KAC State Website and would not be on any of the district websites. Cindi also passed around the treat list, requesting people to sign up for months which had only one person, or no persons volunteering to bring treats.
Taylor Stucky then introduced D5 member, past KAC State President, and published poet, Roy Beckemeyer, and his topic: Finding Space in CyberSpace for Your Work. Diane Wahto was scheduled to present with Roy, however, she was unable to be there due to recovery from surgery.
Roy began by discussing the pros and cons of online vs. print publishing. The cons of publishing online, editors and agents can access your work on the web, readers can sample your work, low distribution costs, and your writing can be combined with other media. The cons for online publishing include the increased chance of plagiarism, possible format restriction, and lower pay. The pros of print publishing include that it can be found in bookstores, libraries may stock your book, and it usually pays more than online work. The cons for print publication include readers have to want to read your work bad enough to buy it, less geographic or audience outreach, and the work is not as accessible once it is out of print. Further information can be found at the Colorado State University Writing Guide: Online vs. Print Publishing at https://writing.colostate.edu/guides/pdfs/guide37.pdf.
Roy went on to discuss several places to submit or publish work online. The websites discussed were:
Blackbird: an online journal of literature and the arts located at https://blackbird.vcu.edu/, https://www.facebook.com/blackbird.journal/, http://www.blackbirdsubmissions.vcu.edu.
KYSO Flash: Knock-Your-Socks-Off Art and Literature at http://www.kysoflash.com/Default.aspx.
Heartland! Poetry of Love, Resistance & Solidarity at http://150kansaspoems.wordpress.com/.
The Ekphrastic Review at http://www.ekphrastic.net/.
River City Poetry at https://rivercitypoetry.org/.
Tittynope Zine at https://tittynopezine.blog/.
The meeting ended with snacks and conversation.
Respectfully submitted,
Cindi Kerr, KAC Website Manager for Connie White, Secretary
