February 2018 - D5 2019 Convention Planning Minutes
Dear KAC D5 2019 Convention Planning Committee,
Here's a summary of February's meeting.
Minutes February 10, 2018
Pre-Convention Planning Session
District 5 has begun planning to host the 2019 State Convention in Wichita, and today we had a preliminary planning session, attended by twelve members. By consensus and voice vote, we decided to seek the Holiday Inn at 540 S. Rock Road as the venue for the Convention, which will be held the first weekend of October 2019.
Ann Fell suggested Paul Bishop as a keynote speaker. Paul is a 30-year veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department and has served three years on their anti-terrorist task force. He also has twenty-five years experience in the investigation of sex crimes. He has written books and movie scripts, is well-known as a speaker all over the U.S. and is a great encourager of writers. After a conference call with those present, Paul agreed to be our keynote speaker. He also suggested a theme, with which we enthusiastically agreed.
Our Theme will be “Hook ‘em and Book ‘em.”
Diane suggested Michael D. Graves as another speaker. Mr. Graves teaches at Emporia State University, and has written a couple of detective stories situated in the Wichita area in the 1930s, (To Leave a Shadow, and Shadow of Death).
Diane also suggested that Bob Dean is working with the Wichita Jazz Festival to plan a Jazz and poetry reading, and we discussed seeking to plan a similar event for the 2019 Convention.
Another suggestion is to ask Sharon Cranford (who spoke at our November meeting on “A Kinship Concealed,”) to see if we can schedule the “Arise” choir to present for the Convention on Sunday morning.
Various members of the group volunteered to chair the following committees:
General Convention Chairman – Diane Wahto (on the condition that she have a co-chair)
General Convention Co-chairman – Connie White
Registration - Roy Beckemeyer
Bookroom - Ray (Griz) Racobs
Hotel Liaison - Susan Powell
Photographer – Don Marler
Speakers - Ann Fell
Program Design – Sandee Taylor and Sheila Morgan
Transportation/Shuttle - Loren Harder
Neel Holler offered to make “door cards” for the various room assignments, as the rooms have a bracket next to the door for these, and in case of room reassignments, there may be a need for immediate changes to the cards. Also, Neel offered to be ready to assist those who cannot find their meeting rooms.
Chair positions are needed for the following committees:
Room Assignments
Signage
Advertising and Sponsorship sales
Communications Specialist (to adjust microphone levels, connect individual speaker systems, etc.)
Perhaps other committees as the work progresses.
We will want to include every member in the planning and execution of the 2019 Convention, so please consider how you can serve.
There will be another pre-Convention planning session at 12:00 noon on March 10, 2018, in the Larksfield Place meeting room ahead of our District 5 meeting. All members are invited to attend and join the committee of your choice.
