The meeting was called to order by Diane Wahto, President, at 1:30 PM.
The minutes of the September meeting are on the D5 Blogsite.
Announcements:
Diane Wahto’s new book of poetry, The Sad Joy of Leaving, is available. Diane was quite complimentary to Blue Cedar Press, one of our local small presses, and urged us to consider them in the future.
Bob Dean will be presenting “Epistrophy”, a program of reading and music, at the Wichita Advanced Learning Library (2nd and McLean in Wichita) on Sunday, October 21, 2-4:30 PM. KAC District 5 is sponsoring this event, and several of our members will be reading.
The 2018 KAC State Convention was informative and great fun for all in attendance. Ann Fell, Sandee Taylor, Connie White, and Taylor Stucky were said to have done a wonderful job of promoting our 2019 Hook ‘em and Book’em Convention theme.
Tallgrass Film Festival will present Far From the Tree on October 19 at the Orpheum Theater, and October 20 at the Wilke Family Center at First UMC church. Please see the Tallgrass website for further information on tickets. District 5 is a community partner for the event. Diane will make a short presentation on Oct. 19 for D5, and Connie will present on Oct. 20. There are actually several movies being presented, so if you are interested, check out the Tallgrass Film Festival, 2018, Wichita for further information.
All members of D5 are invited to attend our Convention Planning Sessions each month at 12:30 before our regular meeting. As time progresses, we will be needing more volunteers to fill in the details of planning and executing a wonderful 2019 State Convention. Please come and help.
Diane reminded us that if we have entered State contests in 2018 and did not win an award, we can go to Submittables and find our entry with judges comments, etc.
Treasurer’s Report: Funds currently on hand: $7335.50. A speaker’s fee of $25 was paid last month. Also, there is a check outstanding for payment for the printing of bookmarks which has not come out of the account yet.
PROGRAM: Cindi Kerr presented NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) and encouraged us to join. This is an international event encouraging writers to write a 50,000 word novel in the 30 days of November. Several in the group offered their previous experiences with NaNoWriMo. Cindi presented a brochure about the event which gave helpful information, or you can look up NaNoWriMo online. We did a short writing prompt “flash outlining” a novel we might write.
The meeting adjourned about 3:00 p.m. and members lingered afterward to exchange ideas and fellowship. Our next meeting will be held November 10, 2018.
All members are invited to attend the Convention Planning Session at 12:30, with the D5 meeting to be held at 1:30, both in the Larksfield Place Dining Room meeting room.
