Cuppa Creations is a new creative writer's group in Kansas authors Club D5. We invite others to join us. We are an eclectic group, writing in various genres. Our goal is simply to encourage one another. Membership is not limited to KAC members so if you have ever thought you might want to write, we would invite you to join us. Our meeting place is not permanently set just now. We like the coffee shop atmosphere, and our next meeting will be on Saturday January 14th at 1:00 p.m. at Sojourner's Coffee Shop, on the northeast corner of Ridge and Maple just east of McAlister's Deli. So, come and check us out. For more information call 316-210-2917.

The Peace Committee will host a book launch on Thursday, December 1, featuring two 2022 books by local authors that center on race. Thursday at 7 p.m. at 655 S. Lorraine, at the Lorraine Avenue Mennonite Church in the sanctuary. Dr. Reginald Jarrett's book 31 Days [Nights]: Memoir of Living Black in America is a series of short essays about his life here in Wichita and across the U.S. A truth-telling book of interpersonal encounters among various ethnicities of Americans told by a gifted communicator, 31 Days will surprise readers and enlarge their understanding of how race functions in America. Jarrell is a professor at Southwestern University and a lawyer, pastor, and TV journalist who has lived across the U.S. but grew up in Wichita. This is his second book. Dr. Gretchen Eick's newest novel, Dark Crossings, takes place in 2019. An interracial family with two teens living in Evanston, IL, north of Chicago is devastated when a family member is murdered. The difficult journey through the survivors' grief nearly breaks them. The discovery through a DNA test of unknown family members connected to the Philadelphia police murder of 12 Black people on May 13, 1985, helps them reconstruct their lives. Eick is a professor of history emerita and teaches at WSU's Lifelong Learning program. This is her eighth book. The authors will read excerpts and discuss their books and what each adds to our knowledge of the role of "race" in today's U.S. The November D5 meeting was called to order at 1:30, with eight attendees at Asbury church and none online. Attendees spent most of the meeting discussing some proposed changes to the D5 bylaws based on changes made at the state level. There was also a brief discussion about the potential of a D5 retreat at a hunting center in Moline in the spring. The meeting was adjourned at 3:30. The next meeting will be on December 10th, and will include officer elections and a read-around.

Cynthia Ross earned an honorable mention for her Japanese form poem, “Ink-stained Fingers.” Sandee Lee received the following awards: First place prose theme—“The Write Life” Second place flash fiction—“In My Room” Honorable Mention humor—“That’s Enough” The November 12 meeting will provide you with vital information about the changes coming in D5. These changes are necessary to bring us into alignment with the new bylaws of KAC. While examining the adjustments planned for D5, it became obvious that we needed to define the responsibilities of both elected and appointed leadership positions which became part of the suggested changes.
D5 needs your input. It is the belief of D5 leadership that the suggested changes creates an opportunity to revitalize our organization. Plan on attending the meeting not only to gain information, but to share your ideas and discover where you fit into D5’s plan for encouraging both experienced and novice writers in our area. A slate of persons to serve on D5 board is being developed by President Connie White and Vice-president Gretchen Eick. The election of officers takes place on December 10 at our annual social. Both the November and December meetings will be held at Asbury Church Fireside Room at 2801 W. 15th, Wichita. Both meetings will be available on Zoom using the following link. https://us02web.zoom.us/j/88246448615?pwd=OHhUZkdhN3FJRmRkdGZmL1VGWS8vdz09 |
