May 2016 - District 5 Meeting Minutes
Dear KAC District 5 Members,
Here's a summary of May's District 5 meeting.
Minutes May 14, 2016
Treasurer Prem Bajaj noted our current balance of $6,960.27.
A list for members to provide refreshments is going around. For July, Amy Ackerman and Roy and Pat Beckemeyer will provide, and in July, Connie White and Griz and Lynda Racobs. We will try to keep you posted a month or two ahead on the refreshment schedules.
We had a wonderful presentation by Conrad Jestmore on writing mysteries. He passed out a 3-page flyer from the Kansas Writers Association on “Writing Crime Fiction” that describes various genres ofcrime fiction, and gives a listing of related web sites and markets for crime fiction. Conrad emphasized the numerous genres and sub-genres of crime fiction, along with target audience and point of view, each of which will affect the terminology, jargon, and necessary research needed for a successful novel.
We shared a fun time writing using a particular given scenario and writing four exercises of the scenario from four different points of view, with read-arounds of our work. Thank you, Conrad for a very interesting and informative afternoon.
Regarding mystery fiction, Connie White received a correspondence from Esther Luttrell advertising a new anthology of mystery fiction, “Murder at the Liberty Ballroom”, an anthology of mystery, thriller, and suspense. Esther has one story in the anthology and she is the editor/publisher of the anthology. This is “volume 1” of what she hopes will be a series of books and an opportunity for newer writers to get their name out there. She is looking for short mysteries of various genres by new writers. She will pay $10 for each submission used, and will help edit, etc. If the series succeeds, she hopes to eventually pay $100 per story. If you are interested, you can contact Esther at [email protected]. “Murder at the Liberty Ballroom” is available on Amazon.
Next meeting is June 11, at 1:30 PM at Larksfield Place dining room, (arrive early to chat, since we need a 2-hour meeting and must vacate the room by 3:30 PM. Our speaker will be Ann Fell on “writing memoirs”, and she asks that we each “bring a memory” for a writing exercise. Hope to see you all then.
Connie White, Secretary
