JUNE 2014 - District 5 Meeting Minutes
Minutes of the District 5 KAC meeting
6-14-14
Rockwell Public Library, Wichita, KS
President Roy Beckemeyer opened the meeting by announcing that the minutes are posted on the blog, continuing the process of moving official communication to the blog. Roy recommended that all who can sign up to receive updates and news via email or the blog.
Registration forms for the convention are now up on the state site. Deadline for the early bird registration is September 1. After that the price goes up. We need candidates for the state board positions for awards and prose contest chairs. Prem Bajaj would like us to offer recognition to all District 5 youth who entered the contest, not just the winners. We decided to invite the entrants to the December read-around meeting. Louise encouraged attendees to share news about their writing by baiting them in with candy.
Starla Criser made an excellent presentation about not just social media, but all forms of cyber-networking to reach an author’s audience. Starla writes as Starla Kay, SK Fero as well as under her real name. She provided handouts that listed detailed instructions for making the most of Google+, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Goodreads, and Shelfari. She hit the highlights of each and how to get the most impact without spending all day on social media. She stressed the importance of posting regularly and providing a brief bio as well as links to where those who follow your posts can buy your books. You should make yourself available to speak to groups and support other writers by encouraging.
She also spoke about the importance of the author platform and how to build one. She said the platform should be in place before the book is published. You also need a battle plan on how to market your book via social media, blogs and public speaking long before your book goes to press. And then Starla elected to become a member of KAC. Welcome aboard, Starla.
If you would like copies of any of her handouts, let me know, and I can scan and email them to you. Contact me at [email protected]. See you in July.
