The deadline for the November Photo Contest has been extended to December 11, 2014. If you've been thinking about entering and just didn't have the time, now is your chance. Write a 500-word story about the above picture following the guidelines here. Good luck!
KAC District 5 will hold a Christmas party for its December meeting. The members will also elect officers and participate in a three-page read around. If members would like, they can bring finger food that requires no plates or silverware to share. However this is not a requirement to attend the meeting. If the writer would like a short verbal critique, members can do that or they can just read their poems and/or three pages of a story. Between the readings members will have the opportunity to visit with other members and network. Ray”Grizz” Racobs still has his monthly contest going and the readers of October and November will be reading their winning entries. We want to end the year with a wonderful, fun couple of hours of friendship and good cheer. The meeting will be held from 2-4 p.m., on Dec. 13, 2014, at the Rockwell Public Library, 5930 E. 9th Street, Wichita, Kansas. November 8, 2014, District 5 KAC Meeting. Editing- How Important Is It To Our Work? Presenters will be Janet Bahl and Kathy Pritchett, members of KAC. Both are professional editors as well as writers.
Editing puts the polish on your words, allows your writing to shine, and will keep the reader interested until the end. Learn about echoes, overused words, the dreaded” ly” words- are they necessary - action words - what are they and how they can replace the old standby of “said” and “asked.” Do you change POV in the correct manner? Are your chapters lengths all over the place- some short – some too long? Does it make a difference? Examples of the above will be discussed. Bring any of your work for a quick review. Janet will discuss why we write in general and will offer a handout listing things to watch for when doing your final edit yourself (yes, plural “edits”). KAC, District 5, meets on the second Saturday from 2-4 p.m., at Rockwell Library, 5930 E. 9th St., Wichita, KS. Hope to see you there!
