The Big Read returns to Kansas this year with book readings and events to recognize True Grit by Charles Portis. The Big Read lasts from October 1 through November 15 but the Big Read Pre-Party takes place at the Wichita Art Museum on Saturday, September 21 from 2:00 - 3:30 p.m. You can check out the schedule of events here. Whether you're a writer, book lover, or both, you won't want to miss the Kansas Book Festival, a free event hosted by the Kansas Historical Society. Located at the Kansas State Capitol in Topeka, the festival is a collection of author presentations, book sales, children's activities, food and music so there's something for everyone in the family. Some of the presenters include Clare Vanderpool, Caryn Mirriam-Goldberg, and Frank White, to name a few. You can check out the schedule of events here. Hope to see you there! As hosts of this year's KAC convention, District 5 members are sending in our registrations in good numbers. Just in case you've put this off, there's still a savings of $15 when your registration is postmarked between now and Sept. 1. Just $85 for the full convention package. Please encourage any high school and college students that you know to register for free by Sept. 15 (meals are an extra charge, but optional). KAC's Our Town Convention is in the spotlight! This afternoon, both Cindi Kerr, one of the two co-chairs, and Sara Jones, convention publicity chair, appeared during the "Your Hour" news segment on KCTU. Tonight, Sara Jones will be back on KCTU's "Mouthy Broads" program shortly after 7:00 p.m. KCTU is a local TV station owned by Ron and Sheryl Nutt (she's a KAC member) in Wichita.
In addition, on Labor Day, tune into KAKE TV to hear Jemelle Holopirek interview Sara Jones about KAC sometime during the one-hour 11:00 a.m. news broadcast. KAC is in the news! Tune in to television channel 43 (KCTU) during lunch today to see two of our Convention Planning Committee members discussing the 2013 Kansas Authors Club Writing Convention and State Conference. Sara Jones and Cindi Kerr are scheduled to speak at 12:12 this afternoon so tune in to watch or record it to view later.
Hazel Hart was featured reading from her latest novel, The Survivalist's Daughter, on Keyhole Conversations. A compelling young adult novel, The Survivalist's Daughter explores the issues of gun control, parental kidnapping, and blended families from the viewpoint of Kindra, the main character who discovers she was kidnapped when she was a toddler. Beginning in September, Tom Mach (D2) will be the Book Review Editor for the Kaw Valley Senior Monthly. This publication circulates in the Lawrence and Topeka regions of Kansas. Here is a preliminary announcement that will be made in the September issue of Senior Monthly.
Any Kansas author who has published a book (other than a poetry collection) within the past three years may submit (not earlier than August 26) a copy of his or her book for consideration of a review in theKaw Valley Senior Monthly. An author may submit only one book for a review (even if he/she has published several different books) and that book should be sent to Tom Mach, A Look at Books, PO Box 486, Lawrence, KS 66044. Submitting a review copy will not guarantee a review and review copies will not be returned to the author.
